With our sourdough starter jars, you don't need to leave the lid ajar for your starter to breathe. Unlike most jars, the lid is designed with shallow channels on the underside, allowing air to flow in and out even when the lid is fully closed. These channels let gases escape, ensuring that your starter can rise without any issues.

Sometimes, a starter can get overly fermented, leaving an unpleasant odor on the lid. Luckily, the silicone material of the jar lid makes it simple to deodorize. You can try boiling it, setting it outside in direct sunlight, or gently "baking" it. To bake the lid, first clean it thoroughly with dish soap to ensure no oil remains, as heat can bake the residue in. Then, preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C), place the lid inside, and check it every 10 minutes for progress. Use caution when handling the lid, as it will be hot. Depending on how strong the smell is, the process might take anywhere from 20 to 50 minutes.
